How hard is it to teach yourself piano?
Okay, so today i got a very high grade in music, and my teacher told me to start learning piano coz i'd be good at it. but my mate told me that it's like 15 pounds a lesson, and i'm not folking that out every week.
so i wanna teach myself. i bought a beginner's dvd from the music store and im buying a keyboard soon, but how hard will it be? how long will it take?

If you want to just learn for fun and can't afford a teacher - then I think its a great idea to teach yourself (I'm doing it myself and its working fine). Learning on your own is better than not learning at all if its something you enjoy doing.
If you want to get really good at the piano, well either you have to be extremely naturally talented (which I would think very few people fall into this category) or you will definitely need a teacher. Good teachers can really catch mistakes you will be making that you won't be able to find on your own.
If you want to get really good, perhaps you can find a teacher willing to teach you just once a month so it won't cost so much. I personally don't think you need a teacher to teach you how to read sheet music. You can do that on your own with tutorial dvd's like you are planning to watch. What you need is a teacher to listen to you play your songs every once in a while to see if your timing is right, if you are playing certain notes loud/soft enough, etc - those are the things you really can't make sure you are doing right on your own. With that, you only need to see them say once a month. Have to say, I can see teachers telling you that you need a lesson once a week. It's possible they might be telling you this because they are motivated by money (more lessons more money for them) or just because they are used to teaching this way. I'd say if you are financially strapped then you ignore their advice and just try doing it say once a month or every couple of weeks first and see how that goes. You may then try having lessons once a week just for a short time period to see if it really does makes a difference. Of course, like I said, if its just for fun and you don't care about getting really good, you don't need a teacher at all.
If you don't get a teacher, I'd suggest downloading midi/mp3 files of songs you want to learn how to play. That way you can listen to them and get some idea of whether you are playing them right. Timing, loud/softeness of how you play can really affect how good you sound and you probably won't get those right as a beginner by just looking at sheet music.
