This question does not belong in 'classical' (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc), but in 'rock and pop'. However, I am familiar with these two albums and so will offer an answer. 'Thick as a Brick' was actually a deliberately 'tongue in cheek' take on 'progressive rock' by Jethro Tull. Rock music aficionados had tried to shoe-horn Tull's previous album, 'Aqualung', in to the 'concept album' genre - something that the band always strongly resisted. So, they thought 'You want a 'concept album? OK, we'll give you a 'concept album.' 'Thick as a Brick' was the result. It's a great album.
I have alwasys placed 'Tubular Bells' into the 'emperor's new clothes' category of music - something that clever marketers convinced the cloth-eared public was good music. In fact, 'Tubular Bells' is a boring, repetitive and cynical money-making exercise which was about as innovational as wrapping fish and chips in an issue of the 'Beano' instead of newspaper. A sham.
