Paceline question: which method do you practice?
When riding in a paceline, do you look at the wheel of the rider in front of you, do you look up at and past their shoulders, do you look down the road ahead, or do you alternate between all of these? We have had a few crashes lately in my cycling club and we are trying to train everyone better. Your thoughts?
Also, which signal do you lose when you move out of the lead position? Vocal/verbal? Right hand behind you pointing left? Left hand out and down?
Some good comments above.
I would add that paceline crashes usually happen because of one or more of these reasons:
- Wheel overlap. Which may not be fatal by itself, if... the rear rider is paying close attention, and the front rider is riding a steady pace and a straight line.
- Accordion effect - when the rider pulling through accelerates (this is bad), which causes the ripple effect down the line - everybody has to accelerate, then the last few people have to slam on their brakes. Again, crash city. Rule #1 that needs to be taught and enforced is "keep the same speed when you pull through". Rule #2 is "close paceline gaps slowly, all movements should be smooth and controlled"
- Not riding smooth/straight. This one should be obvious, but if you're pacelining that usually means the pace is high - which means the weaker riders are on their redline, and their handling skills deteriorate. Other factors are crosswinds, and people who just don't know that when you rotate, you do it smoothly, at the expected time and in the expected direction.
Also, any folks that are obviously struggling, drop back and tell them (don't ask) to stay at the back, for everyone's safety.
One tip that very few clubs do, but more should:
In the parking lot at the ride start, do a pre-ride briefing. The leader(s) should intro any newbies to the ride, ask 'em how comfortable they are in a paceline, and make sure everybody hears the rules of the ride (just like an airline preflight briefing). People feel goofy doing it, but it really works and you feel even worse if somebody crashes and you know you might've prevented it.
