How did the postulates on which the classical thinkers rested their philosophy affect the music of Beethoven?
I have to type a paper on this question...
I'm not sure what it means by postulates though.
Oh also, the question actually asked if the philosophy affected the music of Haydn, Mozart, OR Beethoven, not only just Beethoven. So I can just pick one composer to write about.
Help? =/
Postulates are propositions or premises which, rather than being subject to proof or demonstration of truth, are deemed either to be self-evident, or they are subject to decision.
An example of the first, self-evident kind would be: "the whole is greater than the part". One of the second kind would be if I decided at the start of an essay that, for the duration of that piece of writing "the 'Bling' is the only monetary currency in the world". (In that case, it is only my decision to bring the 'Bling' into being for the purpose of the essay that validates it.)
It's possible that the writers of your paper's question are using 'postulate' more loosely, in the sense of a 'premise' or a 'proposition' without the formal qualifications postulates really should require. You can only judge, based on your course material overall, which applies here?
To tackle your paper, you will first have to find out what the core postulates or premises of those classical thinkers were and then work out which you think could have a bearing on music. Next, you'll have to assess which of those three composers you have been given show any signs, in their work, of reflecting any of the qualities or influences that could be ascribed to the postulates you have selected earlier as having a possible bearing on music. Only by comparing what you know about those postulates with what you know about these composers and their work will you be able to decide which, if any, or maybe even all, or none, show qualities that you feel comfortably certain to say that they reflect those classical postulates.
