Is there a good method to teach a small dog to lay?
I've tried moving the treat down and toward him but that doesn't seem to work, maybe because he's so small he doesn't have to lay down, he just bends his head down and then gets frustrated that he doesn't get the treat. I've tried moving his front legs down too but he just pops up his back legs. He is a miniature dachshund and is good with sit, stay, come, and he can target things, but I can't for the life of me teach him to lay!! Any advice?
There are ways to do it without touching the dog, by only using hand gestures. I have trained several sizes of dogs to work with hand and voice commands, or with either of them alone.
Teaching a dog to stay is a good first, so you have more control over their movement. Just hold your hand out, palm facing them and tell them to stay. Walk away short distances first, always facing them. When they have successfully "stayed," make sure to reward them. Then you can eventually walk away back turned to them and they should stay.
From here, you can easily teach a dog to sit. Tell them to stay, and move a treat in your hand directly over their head. Keep moving it back over their head until they sit their butt on the ground...dogs typically sit and look backwards before they spin around to look at your hand. Eventually, just sticking your hand out or pointing back over their head, or the command sit, should be the command...with no treat in hand.
For lay, tell them to sit, then drop to one knee and sit your hand against the ground with a treat in it in front of them. They will go towards the ground, keep it there and continue to command lay until they lay down. Then you have a hand command for lay, as well as a voice command. Again, you can remove the treat in hand after they start listening to your command.
This is a really easy way, and very basic, to learn commands. I suggest only working on one command at a time, and only moving on to another when the first has been taught. Of course, there's a lot of other ways to do it. Remember, it's easier to build one command off of something previously learned. And it's good to work with the dog every day. Also, remember to not only give treats, but reinnforce with positive praise as well. Some dogs appreciate a good scratch and excited words as much as food.
If your dog won't lay down directly, and just bends his head down, pull the treat forward a little. Then, he either has to get up and try again, or lay down...which he will eventually try after moving 50 times. Lol, it's all about patience on your part. Remember, he doesn't understand what you're asking quite yet...so he's prob as frustrated as you are!
