Guitar Melody Help!!?
I just got this thing that teaches you the guitar. Apparently though they think that everyone knows how to play a melody, so they pretty much skipped that part except for about 20 seconds of listening to her play one. So I have a question: HOW DO YOU PLAY A MELODY?? This is bugging me. 
To play a melody, you need to understand music theory. I'll explain it as simply as I can, but I recommend buying a book for it.
You first need to find the key and that you want to play in. This would be like the key of C, Key of D, ect. Then, you pick the mode. The mode determines the feel of the song. For example, if you want a strong, vibrant song, you would choose Mixalodian or Dorian. If you wanted a sad sounding song, then you would pick Aeolian. ( I recommend getting th e book just to learn the modes and how they work!)
After you do that, it is simple. Most melodies include the first (this is the root note, or the key note {for example, if you're using the key of C, then the root note is C}) third, and fifth.
In the Key of C Major, the first is C, the third is E, and the fifth is G.
In the Key of G Major, the first is G, the third is B, and the fifth is D.
Then, you think of how you want it to sound, if you don't really know, play around with the notes in the scale that you chose until you think you've found something catchy. Play it over and over again to remember it, or write it down to save for later.
After you find a good riff, just keep adding on, throwing in flourishes where you can. Just remember that the melody repeats itself, even if you change scales throughout the song, so pick something that you know that you can play over and over.
If you are having trouble, listen to your favorite guitarist, get the music from a tab site like ultimate-guitar.com , learn it, then change it to where it sounds like a different song by changing around notes and rhythm.
It takes a lot of practice to write a good melody, and I can assure you that the first few that you write probably will not be to great, lol, but hang in there!

It contains everything from music theory, to maintenence, to technique, to how-to-rewire. I swear that that book has saved my life at least twice! lol, It is worth the $28 through and through.
