Is George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" considered to be jazz?
This is one of my favorite pieces, most specifically the 16 minute version, but I've noted some disagreement over its genre.
If you are referring to the symphonic version of "Rhapsody in Blue," it is considered to be classical music with jazz-influenced effects. It was originally written by George Gershwin for piano and jazz band in 1924, then arranged for orchestra by Ferde Grofé four times, in 1924, 1926, 1942, and finally in 1946.
The piece (using Grofé's earliest arrangement) received its premiere in a concert entitled "An Experiment in Modern Music," which was held on 12 February 1924, in Aeolian Hall, New York, by Paul Whiteman and his band with Gershwin playing the piano (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QxWxsK8_3s and http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Rhapsody%20in%20Blue%2FConcerto%20in%20F:1921305125;_ylt=AigEB7jIQ2pY4RNq8X9aKlkJGbgF). Whiteman, who styled himself as "The King of Jazz," commissioned Gershwin to write a jazz [piano] concerto. It became a rhapsody, which differs from a concerto in that it features one extended movement instead of separate movements. Whiteman's advertisement for the 1924 concert predisposed most of the audience to listen to the piece as a jazz work, which made its 9-minute 78 rpm recording very popular, selling over a million copies.
The 1942 Grofé arrangement is the one most commonly heard today. A 16-minute version was famously recorded by Leonard Bernstein and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra in 1959 (see http://www.amazon.com/Gershwin-Rhapsody-Blue-American-Paris/dp/B0000025MH). It was also played on February 10, 2008, at the 50th Grammy Awards by Herbie Hancock and pianist Lang Lang (see http://www.weshow.com/us/p/33398/herbie_hancock_rhapsody_in_blue_live_at_the_2008_grammy_awards).
The symphonic, classical version (about 13 minutes in duration) is probably best exemplified by Oscar Levant (pianist), Eugene Ormandy (conductor) and the Philadelphia Orchestra (see http://www.amazon.com/Levant-Plays-Gershwin/dp/B0000026H0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1220873436&sr=1-1). Levant can also be seen performing the number in the 1945 movie "Rhapsody in Blue," which employed Paul Whiteman as musical director and Ferde Grofé as orchestrator.
The 1985 16-minute performance by Michael Tilson Thomas (pianist and conductor) and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, after being issued on compact disc (see http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/1238035/a/Gershwin:+Rhapsody+In+Blue,+Etc+%2F+Tilson+Thomas.htm), caused the jazz band version to become popular. James Levine (pianist & conductor) and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra play the 16-minute jazz band version on a 1993 Deutsche Grammophon recording (http://www.discogs.com/release/1099008).
Jazz pianist Marcus Roberts recorded a 28-minute, jazz-oriented version with Robert Sabin (conductor) and members of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and St. Luke's Orchestra on the album "Portraits in Blue," released by Sony Classical in 1996 (see http://www.amazon.com/Portraits-Blue-Marcus-Roberts/dp/B000002C17). The album received 4.5 stars (out of 5) from Down Beat Magazine and was nominated for a Grammy Award.
