How to play blues piano?
Currently, I am at a point in my playing to where I am realizing my weaknesses in my playing, such as my improvisations and my amount of tension in my hands. When I improvise, I seem not able to find a find a scale or pattern to follow, which leads to me just playing really fast. Are there any kind of blues scale books for piano?
( such as this "http://www.amazon.com/Fretboard-Roadmaps-Guitar-Essential-Patterns/dp/0634001140", but for piano)
And in regards to my tension in my hands, I have very little noticeable tension in my hands, but I can't seem to grasp the effortless gracing of the keys ( much like billy joels intro solo in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZh8YjbDiVk) Are exercises from Hanon a key to this, or just brute scale work? It seems like a skill that is not easily gained.
If you could help me with either of these problems, that would be great. Thanks!
Edit: I've been playing for about 9 years now, so I didn't just start recently.
i had a similar problem when i wanted to learn to improvise but about a year ago i realised that the blues scale in the key of D, E and A are exactly the same shape so i was able to memorise them and link them together cos it sounds good. but for about 2 years when i didn't really care i only worked in the key of C with the 12 bar blues to practise playing with both hands and keeping time so i could play the scale (C, D#, F, F#, G, A#, C) easily and when i started playing in other keys i just worked out the scale by moving each note up or down however many semi tones needed
the best thing about the blues is that nothing is set in concrete you can press any thing and it can sound good.
so just practice mate and if that doesn't work then just start punching the pano and say you wanted it to sound like that.
