I have a broken note on my piano. It plays a god-awful noise. What is this repair called?
It is of normal volume, but it sounds like a tritone!
When I play the note, it makes an awful sound.
It is a normal musical sound, but it is horribly distinct. It sounds like 2 notes are playing together that are a tritone.
I have an 88 key piano and just this one key gives me the problem.
I know nothing about pianos, but a lot about guitars and music and waves (physics)
tuning.
Most keys on the piano have multiple strings. This is so a high note (with 3 strings) will sound as loud as one of the middle ones (2 strings) or low notes (1 string).
Pianos go out of tune due to heavy use, but more commonly due to changes in weather and humidity. You can lessen this effect through the seasons by not placing the piano near a window, hot outside wall, or AC or heating vent.
Deliberate detuning of a piano results in the honky-tonk sound you hear in saloons in westerns.
Solution: Ask at a local music school who they get to tune their piano. Recommendations are always good in this matter. If you like the tuner, get him or her to come back once a year.
